Retro Village Signs / Travel Posters
While illustrating local landmarks for a guide book, I became interested in how certain buildings represent a place and are considered part of its landscape and visual description. These buildings as a collective, form a skyline for a place, a representation of a community, and in addition can give us a little hint as to who might live there.
My research took me to exploring travel posters and from this village signs, which often depicted a characteristic feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. Village signs were commonly created from wood or metal or a combination of both, with the designs often being made by the local community.
Being a fan of both travel posters and village signs (I’mveryrock and roll), I decided to create my own village sign/travel poster series.
